Years ago, UPS engineers devised route-optimization plans to increase efficiency, reduce fuel consumption and get drivers back to their centers earlier. They came up with a simple rule:
Minimize – or sometimes, eliminate – left-hand turns.
It's simple but effective.
Since 2004 UPS has saved an estimated 10 million gallons of gas.
Carbon emissions were reduced by 100,000 metric tons – the equivalent of 5,300 cars off the road for an entire year.
One of my favorite passages in the Bible is a qoute from Jesus (the Message version):
"Here is a simple, rule-of-thumb guide for behavior: Ask yourself what you want people to do for you, then grab the initiative and do it for them. Add up God's Law and Prophets and this is what you get. "(Matthew 7:12 MSG)
This is the churches -followers of Jesus- equivalent of eliminating left turns.
It is simple. But effective.
Give it a try in your neighborhood. Make a series of right turns around the block and do for others what you would want them to do for you.
