What aids in the making of disicples and what hinders in making of disciples in planting new churches?

As you think about this question, how would you answer it with a theological and a missiological mindset?

How you answer may be shaped by your understanding of what it means to "make disciples" and what picture you have in mind for the "church"?

Paul did not start with a gathering or a building, etc.(Is this an aid or a hindrance as you think about it?) He actually began with evangelism, and often that was done in larger synagogues giving him a larger context for the preaching of the "Good News" (See Acts 13:5; 14:1; 17:1; 17; 18:4; 19:8). What hinders or aids the way we think about "doing" evangelism in places like Portland OR?

Finally, after "making a disciple" leaders like Paul formulated the believers into a gathering (Acts 2:46 tells us that the early believers gathered daily in Temples, House to House, etc. then taught them and established them in the faith, and then appointed Elders and Deacons (The plural implying some structure and potential size (See Acts 14:21-23). What aids and hindrances do you see in Paul's methods?

Ultimately, Paul was concerned with multiplication not just replication. What hinders us in the journey of multiplication of church plants? What aids us in the multiplication of new churches?

We would love to explore this question with you in Portland OR? Come sow the gospel and make disciples with us here! @sendportland #churchplanting #send #NAMB

From "I" to "WE" in Church Planting

In reading the gospels, it is not long into the story we see the value JESUS placed on teams in sowing the gospel. JESUS valued pairs of disciples and teams of disciples to carry out the work of the KINGDOM.

If we are going to sow the gospel in neighborhoods/communities in our cities we need to shift our model from "I" (the Parachuted Planter) to "WE" (team of gifted disciples).

The Bible affirms strength in teams. Are there limitations? Is it messy? Probably. But limitations, messiness, "we've never done it this way before," are strongly outweighed by what we see in the life of JESUS and the momentum created in advancing the work of the Kingdom.

Teams provide strength, a variety of gifts and personalities, multiplication capacity, ownership, etc.

Why do you think JESUS used teams to advance the KINGDOM? What can we learn from JESUS as we think about sowing the gospel and seeing new churches started in our Urban centers?

Portland Church Plantng

We at Portland Church Planting hope you have a great gathering at the SBC Pastors Conference and the following SBC Annual Meeting.

While you are gathered in Phoenix and enjoying time with old/new friends, we would like you to pray for Portland OR (One of the 25 #send cities of NAMB).

Pray to the Lord of the Harvest to send laborers into His harvest field. As you pray, consider being an answer to that prayer by advocating for Portland, coming to Portland for a Vision/Encounter weekend, mobilizing a church planting team from your church to come invest their lives here in Portland, and by giving to CP to help fund church planting in places like Portland OR.

Enjoy the next few days in Arizona. Thanks for praying for Portland Church Planting
