On the 12th day of Christmas.....God REVEALED His only Son who would bring glory to the nation of Israel and salvation to Gentiles. I love this word from Simeon in Luke's gospel, "With my own eyes I have seen your salvation; it's now out in the open for everyone to see:a God-revealing light to the non-Jewish nations, and of glory for your people Israel" (Luke 2). On the twelfth day of Christmas, we celebrate epiphany which means "to show" or "to make known" or even "to reveal." In Western churches, we pause and remember the coming of the wise men bringing gifts to visit the Christ child, who by so doing "reveal" Jesus to the world as Lord and King.
I love The Christmas season. It saddens me when I hear Christians who dread this sacred holiday. How? How do you dislike Christmas. Perhaps, because we who are the church, have settled for the commercialization of Christmas, instead of; the sacredness of this brief 12 days on the calendar when we celebrate the Gift, the Giver and the Wonder of God changing everything! Church, let us reclaim the holiday and make it more than a day, but a season -12 Days of Christmas. Church plant, instill the habit of celebrating the day - Christmas. AND, the twelve days of the REVEALING -the epiphany.
Do you celebrate Christmas as a day or Christmas as a season?
