Recently Sean Benesh (@mtbikerguy) and myself attended a conference in Seattle. The theme of the conference was INHABIT. The question presented was as follows: As followers of Jesus and His church, how do we PRACTICE our faith, make ourselves PRESENT, and live out the Kingdom of God in the PLACE He has sowed us? A diverse group of practitioners and presenters shared around the concepts of practice, place, and presence.
Jon Huckins and Rob Yackley of NieuCommunities in San Diego shared the 6 postures their church practices as a "new monastic" community and how they integrate/sustain the practice throughout the everyday. Here are the 6 postures:
1. LISTENING: hear from God and hear the stories of our neighbors and community
2. SUBMERGING: intentional effort....INTENTIONAL....to eat, shop, and recreate in the NEIGHBORHOOD.
3. INVITING: ...into our lives, events....and seek to be invited into homes of our neighbors.
4. CONTENDING: volunteer, understanding the injustices in the community, hang out in the marginalized places of the 'hood, WALK.....
5. IMAGINING: creativity....
6. ENTRUSTING: multiplying and sending out the church to other neighborhoods!
PRE-ORDER the book and/or the book and study guide to learn more about these missional POSTURES.
INTRO to the Book/Study guide:
While praying for his community on the Island of Iona, the Celtic monk St. Columba described his experience as a thin place a location where heaven and earth seemed only thinly separated.
In the same way, God s kingdom is being realized here on earth with stories of restoration and redemption. Our God moved into the neighborhood, seeking to invite us into his story of reconciliation, and commission us to missionally engage our neighborhoods with the good news of the kingdom.
Joining the concepts of monasticism and mission, author Jon Huckins will walk you through six postures of missional formation: listening, submerging, inviting, contending, imagining, and entrusting. As you begin to employ these postures, become apprentices of Jesus who are committed to living in and experiencing the thin places.
Through Thin Places, create a fertile soil to commune with God, live in deep community with others, and extend the good news of the kingdom in your local contexts.
Here s what comes with the small group edition:
DVD containing 6 video sessions with Jon Huckins and Rob Yackley
