If You Missed Church This Weekend THEN .....

How would you complete that sentence?

A church recently posted this on twitter, "If you missed church this weekend, catch up online tonight at....." I think they meant to say, "If you missed the WEEKEND GATHERING/WORSHIP SERVICE of the church at (fill-in-the-blank), THEN catch up online at....."

This implies church is a one day event. It is an event you can "get-caught-up-on." Jesus never implied church was a place you go to on the weekend, it is who you are as a called out missional people, 7 days a week, being like Him, and living like Him as His people (which can gather EVERYONE together on the weekend as a part of being THE CHURCH). I don't like church 1/7 of the week. I prefer to be the church during the week as well. YOU?

Language matters. This church probably didn't mean this statement to come across twitter like it did. It is a part of our churchy vocabulary. We have to do better when we talk about what is and isn't Jesus'church.

What do you think?
