Jesus Would Understand a Heart Like Mine

For those who are asking, yes, this is a country song. And, I must admit - I'm a seasonal country music fan.    It is not the sound of the music but the lyrics that usually capture my interest. I like the stories they represent from the "heartland."  So, when I see lyrics from Miranda Lambert's Heart Like Mine, I stop and listen.  Here are the lyrics if you are NOT a country music fanatic (read below).

***What emotion, response, or interpretation comes to mind when you hear these lyrics?****

Here are mine:
1.  I'm grateful Jesus understands me.  I'm grateful for grace ("....but for the grace of God, there go I").   2.  Often, Jesus and Christians views of my heart can be different.  There are several secondary issues of our faith we  Christian make primary issues of the heart.  Jesus says, "Come follow me."  Follow Jesus and He will change our heart to want the things after his own heart.  Right belief will lead to right behavior.  And sometimes, we will disagree on whether those "behaviors" are after God's own heart.  Most the time, we will agree on what those behaviors are.
3.  I want to be viewed more like the Jesus of this song and less like the "christians" of this song.   I want to help build bridges to Jesus.  I don't want to be a barrier to people "understanding the heart" of the Jesus I worship.  I want to see curious God-seekers find their way to God through Christ.

HEART LIKE MINE

MIRANDA LAMBERT / TRAVIS HOWARD / ASHLEY MONROE

I ain’t the kind you take home to mama
I ain’t the kind to wear no ring
Somehow I always get stronger
When I’m on my second drink
Even though I hate to admit it
Sometimes I smoke cigarettes
Christian folks say I should quit it
I just smile and say “God bless”
‘Cause I heard Jesus, He drank wine
And I bet we’d get along just fine
He could calm a storm and heal the blind
And I bet He’d understand a heart like mine
Daddy cried when he saw my tattoo
Said he’d love me anyway
My brother got the brains of the family
So I thought I’d learn to sing
‘Cause I heard Jesus, He drank wine
And I bet we’d get along just fine
He could calm a storm and heal the blind
And I bet He’d understand a heart like mine
I’ll fly away
From it all one day
I’ll fly away
These are the days that I will remember
When my name’s called on the roll
He’ll meet me with two long-stemmed glasses
Make a toast to me coming home
‘Cause I heard Jesus, He drank wine
And I bet we’d get along just fine
He could calm a storm and heal the blind
And I bet He’d understand a heart like mine
Oh, yes He would
