I have been scanning some reviews on Hirsch's book, Right Here, Right Now: Everyday Mission for Everyday People. One review writes,
Alan maps four moves in “missionality”:
His co-author, Lance Ford, addresses some of the practical implications of being an "urban missionary:"
I like this comment by Jeff from one of the blogs I read,
"Being missional is a posture; an attitude; the central embodiment and way of seeing-living in the world. It may have programmatic elements, particularly in relation to communicating the ideas to others, but it is a ‘lived out’ reality that moves us beyond the programmatic. It is an intentional lifestyle that goes with us, everywhere. It isn’t a hat we wear on certain occasions, but an intrinsic, and central, part of our identity in Christ. It’s about opening ourselves up to what God is doing in the world and making ourselves available for the mission that He is already engaged in."
Key words: Posture. Intentional way of living. Living-out the gospel. Central part of our identity in Christ. Joining our missionary God in what He is already doing on a daily basis!
Being an Urban Missionary is imitating the Trinity: We go out like our Missionary Father. We move-into the neighborhood like the incarnational Son. We move alongside like a friend, like Jesus who was a friend to sinners while the Parakaleo comes alongside us in the journey. We move from the destructiveness and dehumanizing aspects of a culture through the conviction of the Holy Spirit.
How do you live like an Urban Missionary?
Alan maps four moves in “missionality”:
1. Move out (into missional engagement).
2. Move in (burrowing down into the culture).
3. Move alongside (friendships and relational networks).
4. Move from (challenging the dehumanizing and sinful aspects of our culture).
His co-author, Lance Ford, addresses some of the practical implications of being an "urban missionary:"
1. Daily life with a missionary’s eye 2. The habit of beholding others.3. Believing and being the gospel.4. Western affluence and spiritual bankruptcy.5. Freeing ourselves to live missionally.6. When things go wrong in the suburbs.7. House churches and small groups as communities of mission.8. Joy of hospitality.9. Power of scattered saints.
